On this day:

Jewel in the Rough

Bradenton Herald - The Village of The Arts.
The Village's image as a chic, up-and-coming arts district is attracting attention all over the state and even in other parts of the nation.
Driving or walking through the Village is like entering a quaint, vivid wonderland. Just south and east of downtown Bradenton, the area's funky old homes and bungalows exude the word "artsy." Artists and gallery owners have painted their structures in brilliant reds, blues, greens and yellows. Many of the homes are a riot of primary hues - red porches, yellow window boxes and blue siding, for instance.
Enter any of the 29 studios or galleries and find one-of-kind artworks by more than 40 artist in just about every media: paintings, ceramics, sculptures, clothing, photography, jewelry, even artistically influenced baked goods. Inside, some of the buildings have been immaculately restored with contemporary floor tiles, insulated windows and updated woodworking.
"The Village has such an eclectic appearance that is refreshing to look at," Theroux said. "You go to brand-new subdivisions and all the homes look the same. We can all be proud of the collaborative effort. No single individual can take credit for it."
