On this day:

One of the biggest misconceptions about inheriting a house: people assume they have to sort through everything, fix it up, and get it "sale ready" before anything else can happen. In reality, homes get sold as-is all the time — furniture, decades of belongings, and deferred maintenance included. You're allowed to take your time with what actually matters to you and let the rest go at your own pace instead of on someone else's timeline. The other thing people don't expect: it rarely feels like a normal real estate transaction. Some days you're thinking about square footage and repairs, and other days you're just standing in a room full of memories. Both are part of it, and there's no "right" way to feel your way through it. If you've been through this, what's the one thing you wish someone had told you beforehand?
